Spanish Pronouns as Objects of Prepositions


In Spanish, a prepositional pronoun (object pronoun) is used instead of the name of a person, animal or a thing. The subject pronoun is always followed by a preposition. Prepositional pronouns (pronombres preposicionales) are similar to the subject pronouns, except, that prepositional pronouns follow a preposition such as a, de, para or con.

Spanish Mí / Ti / Sí + the Preposition ‘Con’ (with)

  • Conmigo – With me
    1. ¿Vienes al cine conmigo?
  • Contigo With you (fam.)
    1. Quiero ir al cine contigo.
  • Consigo– With you (fam./ formal), with him (self), with her (self), with them (selves)
    1. Ella se llevo el dinero consigo.

Subject Pronouns with Spanish Para

Subject Pronouns with Spanish Para

Exceptions:
In Spanish, personal pronouns yo and (NOT and ti) are used as subject pronouns with the following prepositions.

según (according to)
entre (between)
excepto (except)
incluso (including)
salvo (except)
menos (except)

Examples:

  • Todos van de vacaciones incluso tú y yo.
  • Todos quieren ir a la fiesta, menos tú.
  • Nadie lo apoya, excepto yo.
  • Everyone is going on a vacation including you and me.
  • Everyone wants to go to the party, except you.
  • No none follows him, except me.

Examples:

  • El libro es para mí. / The book is for me.
  • A ti no te invitaron a la fiesta. / You were not invited to the party.
  • Laura recibió unas cartas de él. / Laura received some letters from him.

Conmigo / Contigo / Consigo

Prepositional pronouns , ti and combined with the preposition con (with):
Conmigo: with me
Contigo: with you
Consigo: with you (formal), with himself, with herself, with themselves.

Examples:
Los niños están conmigo. / The children are with me.
¿Tienes las llaves contigo? / Do you have the keys with you?
Traen la comida consigo. / They bring the food with them.

Exceptions:
There are some exceptions with the prepositional pronouns, with the following prepositions, the subject pronouns yo and are used instead of and ti.

Excepto / except
Incluso / including
Según / according to

Examples:
Todos compraron un billete de lotería excepto yo.
Everyone bought a lottery ticket except me.

Entre y yo, tú tienes la mejor nota del examen.
Between you and me, you have the best test score.
