Demonstrative Pronouns Spanish


The demonstrative pronouns in Spanish (los pronombres demostrativos en español) have the same forms as the demonstrative adjectives and take the place of the nouns.

  • Demonstrative pronouns (los pronombres demostrativos) have accent marks with the exceptions of the neuters forms: eso, esto and aquello.
  • Demonstrative pronouns agree in gender and number with the nouns they replace.

Examples:

Mi auto es más nuevo que éste.
My car is newer than this one.

¿Cuál bolso es el tuyo? Aquél es el mío.
Which bag is yours? That one over there is mine.

Puedo venir todos los días excepto ése.
I can come every day except that one.

Aquéllos trabajan en ventas.
Those ones over there work in sales.

Demonstrative Pronouns Neuter Forms Spanish

The demonstrative pronouns in Spanish have neuter forms that are used in everyday conversations.

  • Esto
  • Eso
  • Aquello

Esto, eso, aquello are used when referring to concepts, ideas, as well as, nonspecific objects or ideas.

Examples:

¡Lava los platos por favor! Eso es lo que estoy haciendo.
Please wash the dishes! That is what I am doing.

¡Esto es una tragedia!
This is a tragedy!

¿Qué es aquello?
What is that over there?

Common Expressions using Eso in Spanish

Eso es / That is it
Por eso / That is why
¿Y eso? / Why?

Examples:
Carla no quiere ir al cine. / Carla does not want to go to the movie theater.
¿Y eso? / Why?

Este parque siempre está lleno de personas. / This park is always full of people.
Por eso no me gusta allí. That is why I don’t like going there.
