The expressions “many”, “much” and “a lot of” (muchos, mucho y muchas en español) are quantifiers, they allow us to indicate the amount of a noun.
- Many: It is used for countable nouns. (Muchos)
Examples:
Tengo muchos zapatos.
I have many shoes.
Hay muchos animales en el zoológico.
There are many animals in the zoo.
- Much: Usually comes before an uncountable noun. (Mucho, mucha)
Examples:
Hay mucha comida en la cocina.
There is much food in the kitchen.
No tenemos mucha energía para continuar con la carrera.
We don’t have much energy to continue con la carrera.
Este hotel es mucho más grande que el anterior.
This hotel is much bigger than the previous one.
- A lot of: Used when we talk about many units of countable or uncountable nouns. (Mucho, muchos, mucha, muchas)
Examples:
Nosotros compramos muchas peras.
We bought a lot of pears.
Hay muchas personas en el centro comercial.
There are a lot of people in the mall.
Carlos tiene mucho tiempo libre.
Carlos has a lot of free time.
