In Spanish, the preposition ‘por‘ change meaning when used in different contexts. The English equivalent of the Spanish ‘por‘ is usually “For“.
Uses of the Preposition Por
- 1. The preposition Por can be used when indicating duration and expressions of time.
Examples:
Hemos estudiado por seis horas.
We have studied for six hours.
Me quedaré en París por cuatro días.
I will stay in Paris for four days.
Luisa irá al doctor por la mañana.
Luisa will go to the doctor in the morning.
- 2. The preposition Por can be used when indicating movement by transportation or when moving through a place.
Examples:
Mi hermano viene a la casa por bus.
My brother comes to the house by bus.
Enviaré la carta por correo.
I will send the letter by mail.
Caminaremos por la plaza.
We will walk through the square.
Luisa y Camilo siempre caminan por el parque.
