In Spanish, ‘Ser’ and ‘Estar’ are used very commonly in daily conversations. The English equivalent of ‘Ser and Estar’ is the ‘verb to be’.

Usage Examples of Ser
Ser in Spanish can be used in different scenarios:
- Ser can be used to indicate someone’s profession or occupation:
Marta es veterinaria.
Marta is a vet.
Carlos y Joel son consejeros.
Carlos and Joel are advisers
- Ser can be used to indicate nationality or religion:
Lucía es española.
Lucia is Spanish.
Carmela es católica.
Carmela is Catholic.
Note: Remember that unlike in English, in Spanish, adjectives and nouns of nationalities and religion are not capitalized.
- To describe someone’s physical appearance and personality:
Carolina es delgada y con cabello largo.
Carolina is thin and with long hair.
- To express relationships:
Sofia es mi hermana.
Sofia is my sister.
Antonio es el esposo de mi prima.
Antonio is my cousin’s husband.
Ustedes son mis mejores amigos.
You are my best friends.
- To indicate, time, place and dates of events:
Son las tres y media de la tarde.
It’s half past three in the afternoon.
La fiesta es en el restaurante del hotel.
The party is in the hotel restaurant.
Mañana es el cumpleaños de mi mamá.
Tomorrow is my mom’s birthday.
- To indicate quantity and price
